Dr. Richard Fulton Receives MPC's Outstanding Service Award
Dr. Richard "Mick" Fulton of Michigan State University was the recipient of the Midwest Poultry Consortium's 2019 Outstanding Service Award. The award is given each year to an individual who exemplifies Outstanding Service to the Consortium and to the poultry industry as a whole. The award was given to Dr. Fulton at MPC's Annual Meeting held on Tuesday, March 12, at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Dr. Fulton has been an integral part of MPC’s Center of Excellence Scholarship/Internship (COE) Program for many years. He has served as an instructor for the COE’s Avian Health class and has recently taken over the more demanding role of Course Coordinator for the class upon the untimely passing of Dr. Mark Cook. Dr. Fulton was also the recipient of the 2018 Pullet-zer Prize Award which is determined by a vote of COE students and recognizes the faculty member students feel went above and beyond in their efforts to connect with and educate COE students.
In recognition of Dr. Fulton's many years of service to the Midwest Poultry Consortium, it is with great thanks and appreciation that we award him the 2019 Outstanding Service Award. Congratulations, Mick!

Feed Enzymes – Just Some Basics
N.E. Ward, Ph.D., DSM Nutritional Products, Inc.
Robust fungal and bacterial enzyme production continues to improve the efficiency of enzyme manufacturing. In addition, modern-day DNA technology and genetic engineering offer gigantic leaps in physicochemical properties of enzymes. Together, these innovations help steer enzyme application toward poultry and other animal feeds, including that of ruminants. Click

The Midwest Poultry Consortium is putting together its annual 'Welcome Bags' to distribute to students upon their arrival in Madison for the 2019 COE. But we need your help in this effort. We are seeking promotional items and trinkets from MPC member companies to include in these bags to help welcome COE students to the University of Wisconsin.
Items such as highlighters, key chains, flash drives, stress toys, travel mugs, beach towels or other items that promote your company and provide a useful or unique 'welcome' item to our students as they arrive for the start of the 2019 COE would be appreciated. In the past, students have especially appreciated items which help them remain organized and fueled for their classes, i.e., highlighters, post-it notes, travel/coffee mugs, popcorn, etc.).
If you have any products or items you think would be useful in this effort, please help us make our students' transition to Madison a productive one. If you would like to participate, we ask that you provide 40 of any item you contribute.
Please send your items to the MPC office no later than Monday, May 6.(Contact
Chelsea Russell at 651-766-8118 or mpc@mwpoultry.org with any questions.)
The COE experience isn’t complete without the industry internships offered by our valuable sponsors. Every student who attends COE on a full scholarship will complete a summer internship with one of our sponsors at the conclusion of the COE classes. But we need your help as an MPC sponsor! Please consider hosting one or more of our students at one of your facilities this year.
If you are able to host an intern this coming summer, please contact Chelsea Russell at 651.766.8118 ormpc@mwpoultry.org. The sooner you inform us of your internship opportunity, the sooner we can make the best possible match for both you and our students.
Internship hosts provide both pay and housing (if necessary) to COE interns. Pay for 2018 COE student interns ranged from $10-17/hr ($13.32/hr average) and an extended-stay hotel room was the most common form of housing. (Contact Chelsea Russell for more information on hosting a student.)
Thank you to our 2018 internship hosts: Aviagen; Cooper Farms; Daybreak Foods; Farmers Automatic of America – Aggero; Hy-Line North America; Iowa Cage Free; Jennie-O Turkey Store; Life-Science Innovations; MacFarlane Pheasants; Maple Leaf Farms; Ohio Poultry Association; Pilgrim’s; Rembrandt Foods; Rose Acre Farms; Sonstegard Foods; Sparboe Farms; and Trillium Farm Holdings, LLC.
With your help, we hope to continue to offer great, hands-on work experience for our 2019 COE students. Please let us know if you have internship opportunities available for our COE students.

MPC encouraged past and current COE students to attend the second annual Student Careers Program held on March 14th, during the Midwest Poultry Federation’s Annual Convention.

Past graduates Logan Hulst (Hy-Line International) and Brian Joyer (Hy-Line NA) also participated in the speed networking event. Seven COE students attended the event to interview and network within the industry. Click here for the complete article.
Participants of First-Ever COE Cross Paths at MPF Convention
Participants of the very first summer session of the Center of Excellence Scholarship/Internship Program (COE) crossed paths at the recent Midwest Poultry Federation Annual Convention, a testament to the decades-long influence the program has had on the U.S. poultry industry over the course of its 24-year history.
Dave Hasemann of Rose Acre Farms and Carrie (Yule) McFarland of H & N North America, both students in the inaugural COE summer session in 1996, may have taken different career paths upon graduation, but each has charted their own distinct course through the poultry industry with the help of the knowledge they acquired while at the COE. The Midwest Poultry Consortium has a great resource to connect people looking for careers in the poultry industry with MPC sponsor companies seeking to fill positions with qualified candidates.
MPC's Jobs page is a handy tool allowing prospective, past, and current COE students to learn about industry career opportunities. It also allows MPC sponsor companies a convenient way to reach COE students who may be interested in applying for open positions. The Jobs page can be found under the Center of Excellence tab of the MPC website or by clicking here.
MPC sponsors looking to post a position on the Jobs page should email a job description with application information to mpc@mwpoultry.org. Job openings are also promoted on MPC's social media sites.
